Collaborative Projects

With the expansion of cooperative relations with more than 80 universities, institutes, shipping companies, and organizations, the VMU has successfully attracted numerous large-scale investment projects and funding sources from governments and non-governmental organizations, with a total value amounting to tens of millions of USD.

These projects have significantly contributed to upgrading the system of laboratories, simulators and training equipment, as well as enhancing the quality of the faculty members and researchers through technology transfer and training activities, notably:

  • Project on the improvement of Higher Maritime Education in Viet Nam, funded by JICA.
  • Project on improving Training and Research capacity of the Faculty of Shipbuilding and the Faculty of Hydraulic Engineering, funded by the World Bank (WB).
  • Japan’s grant aid for provision of Industrial products, funded by the Government of Japan.
  • The Project Establishment of the Japan-Mekong Regional Logistics Training Center in Viet Nam funded by the Japan-ASEAN Integration Fund (JAIF).
  • The receiving T/S Hannara (now renamed T/S VMU Viet-Han), granted by the Government of the Republic of Korea to the Government of Viet Nam.

In addition, Vietnam Maritime University has actively promoted and implemented numerous Undergraduate and Graduate collaborative program with many prestigious universities over the world, including:
  • The Advanced Programs in cooperation with California Maritime Academy (USA).
  • The Extension of the Advanced Program in collaboration with the University of Gloucestershire (United Kingdom).
  • The “2+2” Articulation Program with the University of Tasmania – UTAS (Australia).

Furthermore, the University has also facilitated the establishment of joint-venture companies with Japanese partners, such as:

  • The Company for Training, Labors Supply and Maritime Service Ltd. (VINIC) was firstly founded as a joint venture company between the Vietnam Maritime University and the Nippon Steel Shipping Co., Ltd. (now as NS United Kaiun Kaisha, Ltd.) in 1997, with the main business of training and improving the professions for the Vietnamese maritime officers and engineers as well as recruiting and manning seafarers for working on board Japanese and other foreign fleets.

  • The Center for Training and Improvement of Ship Design (VMSK), a joint venture between Vietnam Maritime University and Mitsui & Co., Ltd., Kanax Corp., and Shin Kurushima Dockyard Co., Ltd. - operates in designing and provides ship design out-sourcing services to the domestic and foreign shipyards
