The English Linguistics specialization within the English Language major.
The English Linguistics specialization within the English Language program at Vietnam Maritime University, designed by the Faculty of Foreign Studies, is developed based on the strengths of curricula from prestigious domestic and international universities. Regularly updated to meet industry demands and comply with Ministry of Education & Training and Vietnam Maritime University regulations, the program equips students with advanced English language proficiency for social, academic, and professional contexts.
Graduates of this specialization will earn a Bachelor’s degree in English Language with a focus on English linguistics, demonstrating strong communication skills and a solid foundation in linguistic theory, language acquisition, phonetics, syntax, semantics, and discourse analysis. They will also develop research skills in English studies and gain a deep understanding of the cultural, social, and historical aspects of English-speaking countries.
The program emphasizes the development of dynamic and adaptable professionals capable of excelling in diverse work environments. Graduates will be well-suited for careers as linguists, translators, interpreters, English language teachers, curriculum developers, content writers/editors, researchers, and communication specialists. With expertise in language structure, linguistic analysis, and cross-cultural communication, they will be prepared to contribute effectively to education, research, publishing, international relations, and language-related industries in both local and global contexts.
2. Curriculum
The curriculum of the English Linguistics specialization within the English Language program is structured into 8 semesters, integrating both theoretical and practical learning:
Semester I provides students with foundational knowledge and develops four basic English skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing. In addition, students are introduced to linguistics and phonetics with Basic Phonetics and Practical English Grammar 1. Also, the curriculum includes general knowledge courses like Marxist-Leninist philosophy, which supports a broad academic base.
Semester II develops students’ proficiency in four English skills and grammar, while Political Economy and General Law cover the key concepts of politics and laws in daily life. Besides, cultural studies of the Vietnamese Cultural Foundation, Business English 1 and selective subjects such as Japanese 1, Korean 1, and Chinese 1, expand students’ understanding of societal context.
Semester III deepens students’ competency in four English skills while broadening their cultural knowledge through subjects such as British-American Culture and Civilization, Science Socialism, and Working in a Multicultural Environment.
Semester IV focuses on the specialized knowledge of linguistics and its application with subjects such as Linguistics 1, Translation 1 and Interpretation 1.
Semester V offers more advanced coursework in English skills and academic writing, Specialized knowledge is also covered in Linguistics 2, Translation 2 and Interpretation 2.
Semester VI enhances research, analytical, and presentational skills with courses like Discourse Analysis, Advanced Presentation, British - American Literature
Semester VII served as the internship phase that allows students to gain hands-on experience in professional settings, applying their knowledge to real-world translation, interpretation, teaching, and communication tasks.
In the final semester, students complete a graduation thesis or specialized courses such as Advanced Essay Writing, Translation Seminar, Interpretation Seminar, allowing them to demonstrate their expertise and readiness for the workforce.
