The Business English specialization within the English Language major.
The Business English specialization within the English Language program at Vietnam Maritime University, designed by the Faculty of Foreign Studies, integrates specialized knowledge of business communication with high-level English proficiency. Developed based on the strengths of curricula from top domestic and international universities, the program is continuously updated to align with industry needs and comply with Ministry of Education & Training and Vietnam Maritime University regulations.
Graduates of this specialization will earn a Bachelor’s degree in English Language with a focus on Business English, equipping them with excellent communication skills tailored for corporate and commercial settings. They will gain expertise in business communication, international trade, marketing, negotiation, corporate correspondence, and professional presentation skills, along with a strong understanding of English linguistics and cultural aspects of global business.
The program prepares students to become dynamic and adaptable professionals who can effectively navigate international business environments. Graduates will be well-prepared for careers in business communication, international trade, marketing & PR, sales, customer service, HR, logistics, export-import, corporate training, and administration. Their combination of linguistic expertise, cultural awareness, and business acumen will enable them to thrive in multinational corporations, government agencies, NGOs, and international organizations, contributing to economic growth and global business integration.
2. Curriculum
The curriculum of the Business English specialization within the English Language program is structured into 8 semesters, integrating both theoretical and practical learning:
Semester I provides students with foundational knowledge and develops four basic English skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing. In addition, students are introduced to linguistics and phonetics with Basic Phonetics and Practical English Grammar 1. Also, the curriculum includes general knowledge courses like Marxist-Leninist philosophy, which supports a broad academic base.
Semester II develops students’ proficiency in four English skills and grammar, while Political Economy and General Law cover the key concepts of politics and laws in daily life. Besides, cultural studies of Business English 1 and selective subjects such as Japanese 1, Korean 1, and Chinese 1, expand students’ understanding of societal context.
Semester III deepens students’ competency in four English skills while broadening their cultural knowledge through subjects such as Business English 2, Vietnamese Cultural Foundation, British-American Culture and Civilization, the History of the Communist Party of Vietnam, and Working in a Multicultural Environment.
Semester IV focuses on the relationship between language and thinking with subjects such as Introduction to Linguistics, Critical Thinking. Students also learn specialized course such as Kinh tế học
Semester V offers more advanced coursework in English language skills and academic Specialized knowledge are also covered in courses such as Business Translation, Business Interpretation, and Fundamentals of Logistics and Supply Chain.
Semester VI enhances research, analytical, and presentational skills with courses like International Economic and Advanced Presentation.
Semester VII served as the internship phase that allows students to gain hands-on experience in professional settings, applying their knowledge to real-world translation, interpretation, teaching, and communication tasks.
In the final semester, students complete a graduation thesis or specialized courses such as Business Translation Seminar, Business Interpretation Seminar, allowing them to demonstrate their expertise and readiness for the workforce.
