Student English Contest 2014 Culture and Integration

Nowadays English is increasingly growing in porpularity. Learning English is not simply a need but it is a must for students to not only graduate from  school or get a good job in the future; the more important point is that with the help of  English we will be able to communicate, learn and share cultures with friends from all around the world. With the above meanings, in the evening of May 7th, Vietnam Maritime University organized English Contest to provide the students with a playground for English practice. The topic of this year program was Vietnamese Culture and Integration.

Attending the program had Dr.Pham Xuan Duong- Vice President of Vietnam Maritime University; Mr. Nguyen Duc Hanh- Secretary of  Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union of VIMARU; Mr.Nathan Hahn- English Teacher from Apollo Education and Training and the attendances of other representatives from all departments and faculties in our University, all teacher and students for showing up.

Participating the contest, there were 4 teams coming from 10 Faculties:

Team 1- Flamboyant included Faculty of Marine Sciene and Faculty of Information Technology.

Team 2- Ocean included Faculty of Marine Engineering and Faculty of Electrical and Electronic Engineering.

Team 3- Non-stop included Faculty of  Economics, Faculty of Shipping and Institute of Fundamental Sciences.

Team 4- Golden Vietnam included Faculty of Civil Engineering, Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and International School of Education.

And the contest included 4 parts

Part 1: Hello Vietnam ( each team has 3 minutes to introduce themselves . The maximum point is 30, and every 30 seconds exceeding , they will be minus 5 points)

Part 2: Vietnam in my eyes (the main members of 4 teams will answer 15 Multiple –choice questions relating to Vietnamese culture. Each team has 15seconds to prepare for the answer. Each correct answer gets 2 points. The maximum point in this part is 30.

Part 3: Vimaru’s got talent( The criteria in this part focuses much on the creativity and the use of English, especially verbal. The participants may vary, not only the 4 main members. The maximum point is 30, each 15 seconds exceeding will be minus 5 points)

Part 4: Vietnam to the world (each team will choose a package  of 10 questions and answer them alternatively. For each correct answer, you will get 2 points, the maximum points for this round is 20. If you can give the correct answer but cannot pronounce or spell the words in the right way, you will only get 1 point for an answer.)

The final results were summarized as the follows:

Team 1- Flamboyant (the Champion)

Team 2- Ocean (the 1st runner-up

Team 3- Non-stop (the 2nd runner-up)

Team 4- Golden Vietnam(the 2nd runner-up)

Doctor Pham Xuan Duong- Vice President of VMU deliver the opening speech.

Mr.Nathan Hahn- English teacher from Apollo Education and Training congratulated the winner
