History of Faculty
1st April 1956: Maritime department and Primary Navigation School were established, this was precursive Viet Nam Maritime Universiry. The history of Department attached to Viet Nam Maritime Universiry’s Formation History and Development
1957: Upgraded to Maritime High School
1976: Vietnam Maritime Universiry was officially established by the decision of the Government, Maritime Department trained the first course.
Noble Awards
63 years of construction, development and growth, with the tremendous contribution for sea transport sector, Maritime Department was awarded many prestigious Medal by Government. Department has been awarded:
- Labour Medal second class (2002)
- Labour Medal first class (2007)
- Labour Medal third class (1996)

• Many students graduated from the this department became the captain, the manager, the businessman of famous domestic and foreign companies... There has been a great contribution to the cause of building and protecting theVietnam General Federation of Labour.
Function and Assignment:
- Teaching students in Maritime Department of Maritime University all systems including university, colleges, evening classes.... Also participating in professional teaching some major courses for some of the sectors such as Sea Transport Economics, Maritime Engineering, Maritime Safety Assurance.
- Department has also participated in the training of the high school class at maritime sector, Ensuring maritime safety, operation/management level deck officer, the training courses enhancing  professional skills, the training courses providing professional certification as required by the International Maritime Organization IMO ...
- Currently the Department’s staff has been incharged of  Captain and Deck Officers on OOG ships of Japan, South Korea, as well as on ships of the domestic companies.
- In addition to the primary function of teaching, with the expertise staff, Maritime Department also participates in scientific researchs and production.

Graduates are educated with the basic knowledge, professional knowledge and English skill, are trained professional skills of navigation officer according to the regulations of International Maritime Organization (IMO) and the rules of Vietnam that help them competently work as deck officer on board domestic and international fleets as well.

Your future in Maritime Laws: Maritime Legal Expert, Marine Insurance Staff, … Staff of maritime services companies, etc.
It provides gradutes with comprehensive knowledge of laws, insurance and related social knowledge, especially in maritime laws, to help them work with operational laws in reality of maritime agencies and organizations. Graduates have enough professional competency, English skill and Information technology (IT) skill to deal with law and marine insurance.
