History of Faculty
Faculty of Marine Engineering, formerly known as Maritime Engineering Primary School , was established in the 1st, July, 1956. At that time, Mr Nguyen Van Tien was the president, Mr Nguyen Van Vang(called SauVang) was the chairman. Before that, in the 1st, April,1965 Maritime Engneering Primary School was set up at Iced water factory on Cu Chinh Lan street in Haiphong( now is the headquater of Ocean Shipping company number 3). At the beginning of 1957, Navigation Primary School and Maritime Engineering Primary School merged into Maritime Primary School. This day has been considered as the establishment day of Vietnam Maritime University. At that time, Maritime Engineering Department only educate maritime engineers. To meet the increasing demand for environmental management and treatment, especially sea environment, the subject of Environmental Engineeringwas set up in the 8th, November, 2002 at Maritime engineering department to educate specialized engineers. In 2011, due to the retirement of a several leaders, Mr. Nguyen Dai An and Mr. Nguyen Van Tuan were appointed President and Vice president of Institute of Maritime Science and Technology. At the time, Mr. Khieu Huu Trien was hold responsible as the department’s chairman and Mr. Nguyen Huy Hao was appointed as the vice chairman. After changing in the board of directors, the university appointed two vice chairman: Dr Pham Huu Tuan and Dr Le Van Diem in October, 2013. Through nearly 60 years of construction and development, there has been thousands of students educated from Faculty of Marine Engineering. After graduating, they work in different regions of Vietnam, contributing to the success of Vietnam Maritime University. Many of them have been holding important positions in state agencies of maritime.
Highly appreciating the contribution of Martitime Engineering Department in education labour force, government has awarded department with prestigious awards as following:
• Third Class Labor Medal (1996)
• Second Class Labor Medal (2002)
• First Class Labor Medal (2007)
• And many certificates of merit of the Prime Minister, the Ministry of Transport,...
Function and Responsibility:
- Educating undergraduate of Environmental Engineering and Maritime Engineering
- Educating master and doctoral degrees in Ship Operation and Maintenance
- Participates in scientific researchs and production, develop technology
- Training operation/management level deck officer.

The graduates of Marine Engineering will master knowledge, analysis, synthetic and applied methodology to work on the following subjects: internal combustion engines, operation, automation, boilers, machinery, air condition,... The graduates can work as engine officer on board domestic and international fleets as well, have capable of proficiency operation and repairing the machineries and equipment, troubleshooting these incidents and breakdowns.

Provide specialized knowledge of applying the mathematics, physics, computer science in the description, calculation and simulation on controls and automation technology to mechanical and hydraulic transmission supported by electrical & electronics control; using the modern methods, tools in design and evaluation of systematical solutions and technical products in the fields of Fluid Power Automation.
